The documents you should prepare when moving long distance
Usually, when we talk about long-distance relocations, it is all about how to find the best moving company, or how to gather all the packing supplies that you need. We usually mention that you will need to transfer records, as well. However, the documentation that your relocation can require can oftentimes be overwhelming. At Best Long Distance Movers, we believe in providing you with as much information as possible, so we have compiled an article that will help you with all the paperwork your relocation might require. There are many documents you should prepare when moving long distance, and we are going to point them out!
What kind of documents you should prepare when moving long distance?
Here is a shortlist of all the necessary papers and cards you will need to prepare:
- Passport and ID
- Drivers license
- Credit and ATM cards
- Birth certificate
- Medical records
- Registration and insurance of your vehicle
- Mortgage documents
However, there might be additional papers that you will need to prepare, aside from the “big ones” on this list. For example, if you are traveling with your pet, you are going to need to visit the vet and get all the necessary documentation. Add all of these tasks to your long distance moving checklist, as well. That way, you will have a constant reminder. You are going to need all of these documents in order before you can comfortably move, after all. Forgetting about even a single one can have serious repercussions.
Passport and ID
First and foremost, you need to ensure that your ID and passport are in order. You don’t want to come in a situation that you need to return to your original state to renew them. And, needless to say, you can never forget to bring either one along. Before you leave the house, always double-check if your ID and passport are there. You may be still thinking about the most affordable states to move to and it might slip your mind, after all. The best way is to create a separate list of “necessary documents” and refer to it before you set forth on your journey. This can save you a lot of frustration down the road.
Driver’s license
The next most important document is the driver’s license. Even if you are not driving your vehicle on your own, you will want to take it with you. You never know when you will need to operate a vehicle, and having a valid license is always important. Always have it with you, just in case.
Some of the documents you should prepare when moving long distance – Credit and ATM cards
You never know what might happen when relocating over long distances. It is important to always be able to pay for any services that you might require. Even if you have some cash on hand, you never know when you might need to use your cards. Similarly to how you want to know what are the things to look for in a long distance moving company, you will want to know that your ATM and credit cards are exactly where they need to be. Which is with you, at all times.
Birth certificate
This is one of those documents that you usually do not need, but when you do, you REALLY need it. Therefore, make sure that you have this document in your possession before your trip to your new home. It can be really difficult, at times, to have another copy of your birth certificate, and it may involve you needing to go back to your old neighborhood. You want to avoid having to make such a long trip again, at all costs. Definitely put obtaining this document on your moving checklist. It is well worth your time and effort.
Important documents you should prepare when moving long distance – Medical records
Normally, you will want to transfer these records well before you start your relocation adventure. However, having additional copies on hand might be really important. After all, you never know if you are going to need them on your trip. It is always better to leave nothing to chance. Visit your doctor, have them provide you with a copy of all your medical documentation before you hit the road.
Vehicle registration and insurance documentation
If you are driving your own vehicle, these are the papers that are absolutely essential. Even if not, you will want to prepare these documents before you leave your home. As you don’t use them regularly, it is really easy to forget about them. Try not to fall into this trap, always ensure that you have an idea of where your insurance and registration papers are. You are going to need them at some point, and needing to have them shipped or, god forbid, having to go back to get them is an inconvenience, to say the least.
Mortgage documents
We saved the most important for last. The last one on our list is the mortgage documentation. It gets even more critical if you are in the process of applying for a mortgage. But, in any case, you will want to make sure that all of your documents are present and accounted for. Some of these can be notoriously difficult to obtain, after all, and you really don’t want to go through that again. Not to mention that the need to go back and reacquire them can be quite costly. It is always better to be proactive than reactive. Therefore, before you leave your house, always ensure that these documents are in their respective holders. Otherwise, you might be in for a rude awakening once you arrive at your new home and need to deal with the mortgage.
